22nd Annual 'Just for the Halibut' Fishing Derby
Posted on
Thank you to everyone who came out his past weekend to support our 22nd Annual ‘Just for the Halibut’ fishing derby. With your help, we are able to put on this derby each year and in doing so, support the TLC Fund for Kids. With over three hundred tickets sold, there was some great competition! The weekend was filled with lots of fish weighed in and even more laughs!
The competition was close this year for the top fish! Congratulations to Al Motiuk for taking home first place prize with his 48.5 pound halibut, $7,500! In second was Brandon Alexander with his 44.3 pound fish winning him $2,500. And winning $1,000 with his 42.9 pound catch was Bill Day! Thank you and congratulations to everyone who weighed in a fish over the weekend.

Thanks to our supporters, we were able to give away some great prizes. Not only were there fish prizes for the top 24 fish weighed in, but there were also some great draw prizes, hidden weight prizes, oversize draw prizes and an average weight prize!
We would like to thank all of our sponsors who continue to give generously to events like this one – without them, these events would not be possible. A huge thank you to:
Boat Tote, Berkley, Canoe Cove, Deadly Dick, Dura Baits, Gibbs Delta, G Hjukstrom Knives, Islander Precision Reels, Johns Place, Larry Dalziel, Maritime Museum, Mercury, Navico, Paynes Marine, Pure Fishing, Rapala, Scotty, Sea Pro, SG Power and Yamaha, the Q, Rio, the Zone, Times Colonist, Forged Fly Fishing, Okuma, Alpine Marine, Pro Cure, Spro Baits, Big Rock Sports, Lure Jensen, Six Mile Pub, Scientific Anglers, Amundson and all of our supporters!
This year, the average weight prize was a Yamaha generator donated by SG Power and Yamaha. To find the average weight, we take the total weight of halibut weighed in and divide it by the total number of halibut weighed in. This year, there was 62 fish weighed in totaling 1,764 pounds making the average weight 28.5 pounds. Congratulations to Jade Bradley who won this year’s Average weight prize! This is a great prize and we can’t thank Yamaha and SG Power enough for supporting our derbies year after year.
For our hidden weight prizes, we gave away two $1000 Island Outfitters gift cards. Congratulations to Butch Foster for winning the first gift card with a 24.3 pound halibut and to Scott Cowper for winning the second gift card with his 18.6 pound fish!
