Fishing Report for Week Ending June 26th

Fishing Report for Week Ending June 26th, 2011

SALTWATER

OVERVIEW – Both Salmon and Halibut fishing were GOOD this past week. Visit our facebook page to see reports, news and videos by our guides and staff from their most recent trips!

Sooke – Salmon fishing was GOOD and was picking up all week.  Anglers reported catching fish into the mid 30’s, mostly on anchovies.  Good teaser heads to use are UV Purple Haze and UV Pink Haze, and Jellyfish Purple Onion and Purple haze flashers. Electric Chair squirts were also catching some fish.

HALIBUT – Halibut fishing was GOOD this week for those who were targeting them. Most anglers seemed to be fishing for salmon, so we did not have many halibut reports sent in. There are lots of dogfish around, so jigs and Powerbait White Grubs are your best bet.

Becher Bay – Salmon fishing was GOOD this past week.  Anchovies seemed to be more popular than spoons or squirts.  UV purple haze or UV pink haze teaser heads have been the most popular when using bait and the best flashers have been the Jellyfish Purple Onion, and Purple Haze.

Pedder Bay – Salmon fishing was GOOD this past week.  Anchovies seemed to be more popular than spoons or squirts.  UV purple haze or UV pink haze teaser heads have been the most popular when using bait and the best flashers have been the Jellyfish Purple Onion, and Purple Haze.

Reg Day's 101.9lb Halibut

Victoria Waterfront – Salmon fishing was GOOD this past week at Constance Bank. Anglers reported catching lots of small feeder springs, and also some mature fish in the 20’s.  Pink Haze squirts and 3.5in Mongoose Coyote spoons are still working the best.

HALIBUT – Halibut fishing was GOOD this week.  There are lots of dogfish right now, so the best lures are Gibbs Mudraker jigs, and Delta Jig-a-Lu jigs.  If you want to use bait then octopus is a good bet, but bring lots!

Oak Bay Salmon fishing had been GOOD on the Flats this week. Pink Haze squirts and 3.5in Mongoose Coyote spoons are still working the best.  Anglers who were fishing bait reported that pink or purple haze anchovy teaser heads were the most successful.

HALIBUT – Halibut fishing was GOOD this week.  There are lots of dogfish right now, so the best lures are Gibbs Mudraker jigs, and Delta Jig-a-Lu jigs.  If you want to use bait then octopus is a good bet, but bring lots!

Sidney – Salmon fishing was GOOD near Sidney this week.  Coho Killer spoons and Pink Haze squirts are good lures to use.  If using anchovies try Purple haze or Bloody nose teaser heads.

Reg Day & Todd Steen with their 127.5lb Hali

FRESHWATER

OVERVIEW – Fishing is GOOD on the local lakes for trout and bass.

Cowichan River – The Cowichan River water level is down to 0.43m near Cowichan Lake as of today. Trout fishing has been GOOD on the river.  The best flies have been hares ears, and bead headed prince nymphs.  Remember that it’s barbless hooks only and there is a bait ban on the river.

Local Lakes – Trout fishing is GOOD on most lakes in the South Island area.  A Rhys Davis Trout Baitrix trolled by itself or behind a gang troll has been producing lots of fish.

Bass Fishing - Bass fishing has continued to be GOOD this past week.

Notable Catches – No freshwater notable catches were sent in this week.  If you have any fishing info, notable catches, digital photos (please send as attachments) or tips that you would like to share or have included in our fishing report, please email us at info@fishingvictoria.com. FISH TIP OF THE WEEK

It’s in the bag, or is it?  Many a nice fish is lost because of anglers not netting the fish properly. When you net a fish, you should always lead the fish into the net headfirst. Because fish don’t swim backwards, any movement by the fish should force it deeper into the net. Don’t try to scoop the fish up from behind if you want to land the big one.
