Fishing Report for Week Ending June 20th 2011
Fishing Report for Week Ending June 20th, 2011
SALTWATER
OVERVIEW – Both Salmon and Halibut fishing were GOOD this past week when the weather conditions allowed, but the wind kept anglers off the water for much of the week. Please be advised that as of June 18th the daily limit is two chinook salmon per day of which only one chinook (wild or hatchery!) may be greater than 67 cm. The minimum size limit in these areas is 45cm. This applies to Subareas 19-1 to 19-4 and Subarea 20-5 (those waters near Victoria between Cadboro Pt to Sheringham Pt.)
Congratulations to Brian Orr who won this years Juan de Fuca salmon derby with a 40.7lb chinook! Around 120 fish were weighed in over 2 days.

Sooke – Salmon fishing was FAIR this past week. Anchovies seemed to be more popular than spoons or squirts. Good teaser head colours were green haze and purple haze, with green glow flashers.
HALIBUT – Halibut fishing was SLOW this week. Windy conditions made it difficult for anglers to get out on the water. Octopus was the most popular bait this week, and Berkley Power Grub soft plastics also worked.
Becher Bay – Salmon fishing was FAIR this past week. Anchovies seemed to be more popular than spoons or squirts. Green haze and purple haze teaser heads have been the most popular when using bait and the best flashers have been the Purple Onion, and Purple Haze.
Pedder Bay – Salmon fishing was FAIR this past week. The Juan de Fuca salmon derby took place over the weekend, and was won by Brian Orr with a 40.7lb salmon caught off of Church Rock. Second place went to John Olsen with a 30.5 lb spring.
HALIBUT – Halibut fishing was SLOW this week. Windy conditions made it difficult for anglers to get out on the water. Octopus was the most popular bait this week, and Berkley Power Grub soft plastics also worked.
Victoria Waterfront – Salmon fishing was GOOD this past week at Constance Bank. Most fish were caught on pink and electric chair squirts. Anchovies have also been working well, with most anglers using pink or purple haze teaser heads.
HALIBUT – Halibut fishing was GOOD this week when the weather allowed it, but wind kept many anglers off the water. With lots of dogfish around a good lure to use is Berkley Power Grubs in White. Octopus was also a good choice, but make sure you bring lots if you are fishing bait.

FRESHWATER
OVERVIEW – Fishing is GOOD on the local lakes for trout and bass. The mornings and evenings have been the time of day to catch the most fish.
Cowichan River – The Cowichan River water level is down to 0.65m near Cowichan Lake as of today. Trout fishing has been GOOD on the river, and with lower water levels wading is possible. The best flies have been princess nymphs and pheasant tails. Remember that it’s barbless hooks only and there is a bait ban on the river.
Local Lakes – Trout fishing is GOOD on most lakes in the South Island area. Powerbait Gulp eggs, or worms are good choices. Fly anglers had success with olive wooly buggers, especially at Prospect Lake. Trollers have been doing OK, and reported catching most fish on Gibbs Willow Leaf gang trolls.
Bass Fishing - Bass fishing was GOOD. Bass fishing should heat up along with the weather this week.
Notable Catches – No pictures were sent in this week. FISH TIP OF THE WEEK
After you catch a fish, always, always, always, check your leader for tooth marks or scratches. It’s amazing how often you seem to hook and lose that big monster of a fish to a broken leader. It probably wouldn’t have happened if you had noticed the small scratches left on the leader during a previous battle with a fish.
