Our 12th annual Elk Lake ‘Take a Kid Fishing’ Derby is coming up this Saturday on April 14. Together, let’s get the next generation of anglers out on the water doing what we all love – fishing! The kids are what our Elk Lake derby is all about – which is why all proceeds go to the TLC Fund for Kids. The TLC supports a variety of community activities; however, kids are very important to them. Every kid deserves a little tender loving care that sometimes is missing due to various circumstances. Help us help these deserving kids by getting out on the water this Saturday.
Tickets are available at Island Outfitters for $25 for adults and $10 for juniors. There will be a top prize of $1000 for the largest Bass and largest Trout caught. We have live weigh stations throughout Elk Lake making catch and release possible!
You also have a chance to win a 12’ Lowe boat with a 6Hp Yamaha motor! This boat and motor package is our top adult draw prize. You are eligible to win this package without fishing the derby– just come down to Island Outfitters to get your draw ticket and we will contact the winner!

Island Outfitters ‘Just for the Halibut’ Fishing Derby:
This year is our 22nd annual ‘Just for the Halibut’ fishing derby! It is coming up on April 21 and April 22 and the tides look great! Join us in supporting the TLC Fund for Kids by getting out fishing in this two day Halibut derby.
The top three fish prizes are $7,500 for first, $2,500 for second and $1,000 for third; all cash! We also have lots of great draw and fish prizes as well as hidden weight, average weight and more! Tickets are available in store for $75 per rod until Friday, April 20.

Fishing Report Summary:
Saltwater Overview: The Chinook fishing was SPOTTY around the South Island with most of the Chinooks running from 3 to 18 lbs in size. Halibut fishing was SLOW this past weekend.
Freshwater Overview: Fishing was PICKING UP in most lakes for trout and bass and SLOWING DOWN in the rivers for steelhead.

Recipe: Jamie Oliver’s Jumbo Fish Sticks
1 x 2½ lbs side of salmon, skin off, pin-boned
2 large free-range eggs
1 teaspoon sweet smoked paprika
8 oz whole-grain bread
1 oz Cheddar cheese
extra virgin olive oil
Something as humble and everyday as a fish finger can be made even more nutritious if you make your own, and even better, you can go jumbo in size! I like to use salmon but, of course, white fish works well, too.
Cut the fish into 10 x 4-oz portions. The nature of the shape of the salmon side means that they won’t be uniform in size, but that’s all part of their charm. I tend to cut the side lengthways about 1¼ inch thick, then into chunks from that.
In a shallow bowl, whisk the eggs with the paprika and a pinch of sea salt and black pepper.
Tear the bread into a food processor, grate in the cheese, add 2 tablespoons of oil, and whizz until you have bread crumbs, then tip into a tray (this is probably more bread than you need, but it is easier to work with — simply discard whatever’s left).
Coat each fish portion in the egg mixture, let any excess drip off, then turn in the bread crumbs until well coated all over. Transfer to a pan lined with parchment paper, layering them up between sheets of paper until they’re all coated. Cook right away or freeze in the pan — once frozen, you can pop them into a container or sandwich bags for easier storage
To cook, place however many jumbo fish fingers you need on a roasting pan and cook in a preheated oven at 400°F for 15 minutes from fresh, or 20 minutes from frozen, or until golden and cooked through.

P.A.L course: This two-day course is a firearms safety class presented with the intent to have you handle every firearm you encounter in a safe and responsible manner. The class is $170 for both your non-restricted and restricted firearms license. Upcoming courses are set for May 26/27, June 2/3 and June 23/24.
C.O.R.E. Course: The C.O.R.E. Course is held on a Saturday and Sunday from 8:20 – 4:30 each day and are hosted in the Westshore. You will learn an overview of hunting and outdoors ethics, safety, regulations and lots more. The fee for this course is $150 and we have a sign up sheet in store. The next available course is April 21/22.
